A New Reality at Leiden University: AR and VR as learning tools

Centre for Innovation – Leiden University
Author: Centre for Innovation – Leiden University

The Centre for Innovation has embarked on an innovation journey with teachers and students to  experiment with Virtual and Augmented Reality at Leiden University in educational environments. Augmented Reality (AR) adds information and media into the ambient environment. Virtual Reality (VR) immerses the user into a fully digital or cinematic world.

We explore how these technologies can help users visit inaccessible places, layer information and knowledge onto the environment, and support collaborative learning.Through our ability at the CFI to experiment, prototype and test technology we are able to explore the  potential of immersive technologies for (academic) education. We have found that new media and digital resources are ideal instruments to stimulate an active and inquisitive attitude on the part of students. We therefore believe that AR and VR technologies could be important drivers of change in academic education. In all our work, we strive to ensure added value to (higher) education by applying and integrating new media in practical cases and personal learning scenarios.
